Presentation highlights:

1. Introduction of Smart Grid & Smart home by Dr. Michael Hsieh, UC Berkeley Extension

Abstract: The talk explains the architecture of the electricity grid and the intelligence grid and the stack hierarchy for an end-to-end holistic system. In the second part, the talk explains the building and home automation, the general functionality of the smart homes, the networking technologies for home area network, and the ecosystem of HAN arena. The talk finishes with the review of actions by the venture
capital industry.

2. IC Applications in Smart Grid & Smart Home by Dr. Charlie Chao, UBEC

Abstract: The talk explores semiconductor’s role during this revolutionary time while government spends hundreds of dollars over next twenty years on the Smart Grid, Smart building and Smart Home. For smart home, there are needs on in-home display, smart appliances, energy efficiency control, smart thermostats, network modules, and so on. For Smart Grid, applications such as AMR/AMI, energy transportation, energy storage, and others are needed. This short talk will look into different technologies that Semiconductors can play in the above applications. These technologies include (but not exclusive) ZigBee technology, Power line technology (Home Plug), WiFi Technology, ZigWave Technology, U-SNAP Technology, Home Phone Line Network Alliance.
